Cummings is a registered landscape architect, unusual in the pool industry, and Lasseter is a top-notch construction project manager who can keep complex projects on schedule and budget. In 2011 they struck out on their own to create Design Ecology, an Austin, Texas-based landscape architecture design-build firm specializing in pool- centered landscapes. Since then, the firm has grown to seven employees and has created phenomenal pools around Texas, as well as designed pools in other states. They do many ultramodern and contemporary designs in line with current building trends in Austin, but also executes classic, formal, and more natural designs. "We try to tailor our designs to meet the client's needs," says Cummings. "We try to approach the design in a way that D E S I G N EC O L O GY A M E M B E R O F A P S P, A S L A P L A , S W D ® R E G I S T E R E D , A I A , T R I B U T A R Y R E V E L ATION 3714 Manchaca Road Austin, TX 78704 512-326-2193 designecologyaustin.com In the Pool-Building Business for 7 Years Designs 12-15 Pools per Year SERVICE AREA: Texas A Texas Design Firm Pools Its Founders' Talents D E S I G N E C O L O G Y incorporates the architecture of the home, the slope and topography of the land, the character of the site." Scott and his team create a design and a technical plan for plumbing, hydraulics, and mechanicals in-house, then consult with outside structural engineers to make sure the footings and structure are sound. Ben runs the operations along with a project manager; together they oversee all projects in a similar manner to a general contractor working on a home. Along with taking a holistic approach to their design projects, Design Ecology also focuses on technically challenging projects such as Lautner edges and difficult locations. One of their Lautner-edge pools is on a cliff about 100 feet above Austin's Lake Travis, where the view is such that it's very hard to tell where the back edge of the pool ends and the lake begins. Another dramatic project put the pool 27 feet off the ground with 80 feet of catch basin cantilevered four feet off of the structure. To build it, the team had to create 27-foot- high forms and scaffolding on top of the footing structure. T E X A S DESIGN ECOLOGY "We love challenging locations," says Cummings. "We love pools that are unique and somewhat unusual." Whether a project is simple or complex, the reward for the Design Ecology team is seeing the satisfaction and fun their design and management expertise can bring their clients. "A lot of times I'm there when the clients or the kids are using the pool for the first couple times, and that's pretty rewarding," says Lasseter. Cummings agrees: "It's very enjoyable to know that you're improving the lives of your clients by creating a space that's unique to them and that they love." Photographs by Jimi Smith Photography
